Synopsis: Why does CensorNet use Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and not a later version?

We have chosen Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server for some very good reasons:

  1. In order to achieve VMware certification for our virtual appliance version of CensorNet we needed to choose Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server.
  2. Version 9.x of Ubuntu contains experimental and untested software, which we feel is unsuitable for a security sensitive server application like CensorNet.
  3. 8.04 will be officially supported with security updates for much longer than 9.x.

So all in all, 8.04 is a much more stable, reliable and secure than 9.x at the moment. If the above points should change in the future then we will migrate the operating system version that CensorNet uses.

Thanks

CensorNet Team
